John Henry
1987 - 1997 (released 2025)
During the decade comprising 1987 to 1997, I wrote and recorded many songs, and some of those songs were released to the public on a series of casette albums. There were, however, just as many songs which failed to make the cut, for one reason or another. Some simply were not adequate - either lacking production quality (which was already a low bar) or just comparatively unsatisfying lyrically or sonically; others were fine, but didn't quite fit the theme or feel of the albums that were being completed; still more were great, but just fell through the cracks; and then there were those which were slated as part of visions which never reached fruition. In late 2024, after years of procrastination, I finally dusted off the cassette masters of these demos (sadly, the original 4-track recordings were not accessible due to the disrepair of my old equipment) and converted them to mp3. After listening to them myself and realising that some of them were actually quite decent, I decided that it would be against the spirit of creativity to leave them to languish in the dustbin of obscurity. So, I separated them into three groups for release. This menagerie - Lost & Found - are what I consider to be the best of these songs - not necessarily the best produced or performed - but the ones that perhaps have the best listenability. In fact, several of these I feel to be among my favorite compositions. Another group - released as Elastic Essence - were for a project where I attempted to emulate Rubber Soul, and the remaining songs, which I dumped onto Deep Cuts - are preserved for the most desperate John Henry fans.
